Courtney “Coura” Cooke (SHE/HER), AMFT
Hello San Mateo Child and Family Counseling Center family & friends!
My name is Courtney, I go by Coura, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist working primarily with children, adolescents and young adults. I am excited to be working with you! Here is a little bit about myself:
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and gained my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Counseling Psychology from Palo Alto University and Santa Clara University, respectively. I am a queer therapist, 2nd generation Irish-American and an ally to BIPOC, Asian-American, LGBTQIIA2+ and Differently-Abled folx. I have a personal mission to increase access to services for people in marginalized communities. I am committed to working with you throughout your recovery and am here to help you find better ways to help yourself.
In sessions I use a variety of interventions, primarily stemming from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy. I bring with me a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and client-centered approach as I believe this is the way I can best serve each individual seeking help.
I believe that everyone deserves peace of mind through easily-accessible resources. It is my pleasure to pass on what was generously given to me and this really brings life full-circle for me. My heart is warmed when I see a client have a light-bulb moment where they ‘get it.’ Helping others to build strength and develop grit to get through difficult times is not only a gift to others but nourishes my own soul.
