Anxiety Resources

For Adults we recommend:

“Managing Your Anxiety, Regaining Control When You Feel Stressed, Helpless, and Alone” by McCullough and Mann.

Anxiety and Depression Association of America

Calm clinic for your anxiety and panic

We begin anxiety work with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Breathing Techniques, Relaxation and Mindfulness exercises. We also incorporate graduated exposure and situation hierarchy for those with Panic and/or Agoraphobia. In addition we will focus on expression of feelings, developing assertiveness, issues of people pleasing, and perfectionism. Examining the idea of being accepted for who you are versus what you do, is also helpful.

For Parents of Children we recommend:

“Helping Your Anxious Child” by Rapee, Wignall, Spence, Cobham, & Lyneham.

“Coping Cat” by Philip Kendall, Ph.D. & Kristina Hedtke, M.A.

“What to Do When You Worry Too Much, A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Anxiety” by Dawn Huebner, Ph.D.

The child anxiety network

For children we use the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy technique of “Thinking Realistically and Detective Thinking.” Children also will work on Breathing, Relaxation, and Mindfulness exercises. We will create an “Anxiety Toolbox” and work on Guided Imagery. We will work with parents to create “Stepladders” to gradually expose children to fearful situations. Social skills and anti-bullying discussions may also be helpful.
